praruuDha shaalya.nshu cayaiH manoharam Ā kvacit sthita kraunca ninaada raajitam  prakaama kaamam pramadaa jana priyam vara uuru kaalam shishira aaahvaayam shruNu

1. vara uuru= oh, [dear], with best, thighs; pra ruuDha= verily, ascended [much grown]; shaali  anshu [ikshu]= rice, cobs [sugarcane]; cayaiH= with stacks; manoharam= heart, stealing; kvacit= somewhere [hither and thither]; sthita kraunca= abiding, ruddy gees; ninaada raajitam= by screeches, reverberated; prakaama= heightened; kaamam= perhaps; pramadaa jana priyam= for lusty, womenfolk, gladdening one; shishira aaahvaayam= shishira, winter season, called as such; kaalam shruNu= of time, you listen.

"Oh, dear with best thighs, heart-stealing is this environ with abundantly grown stacks of rice and their cobs, or with sugarcane, and it is reverberated with the screeches of ruddy gees that abide hither and thither... now heightened will be passion, thereby this season will be gladdening for lusty womenfolk, hence listen of this season, called shishira, the winter... [5-1]

Verses from 1 to 10 are composed in vamshastha vR^ittam - metre.

5-2. atra kaale= in this, time; niruddha= blockaded; vaata ayana= air, passages; mandira  udaram= residences, stomach [medial places]; huta ashanaH= fire oblations, eater of [fire]; bhaanumataH  gabhastayaH= one who has light [sun,] by sunrays; guruuNi vaasaansi= heavy, cloths; sa yauvanaaH abalaaH = with, maturity, women of age; sevyataam prayaanti= adorability, get into [people enjoy.]

"Blocking ventilators of their residences for non-passage of chilly air, people are enjoying at this time of winter, abiding in the medial places, at fireplaces, in sunrays, with heavy clothing, and in the company of women of age, for they too will be passionately steamy. [5-2]

5-3. saamprataam= presently; na= not; candanam= sandal-paste; candra mariici shiitalam= moon's, moonbeams [like,] coolant; na= not; sharat indu nirmalam= autumnal, moon's, immaculate; harmya  pR^iSTam= building, tops [made by them]; saandra tuSaaara shiitalaaH= dense, with snow-dew [with sleet,] chilled; vaayavaH= breezes; janasya cittam= people's, heart; na ramayanti= not, delighting.

"Sandal-paste cool like moonbeams, building tops pleasant with immaculate moonshine, or sleet chilled dense breezes...  presently none of them is delightful for the people. [5-3]

Here in simile upama - u.am - candra, mariicayaH; u.me - candana; saa. dharmi - shiitalatvam; vaacaka - iva - lupta samaase; u.a - sharat indu; u.me - harmya priSTa; saa. dharmi - nirmalatvam; vaacaka - iva, samaase lupta; u.maa - saandra tuSaara; u. me - vaayuH; saa. dharmi - shiitalatva; vaacaqka - iva, lupta; vigraha vaakya - candra mariicaya iva shiitalam; sharadinduriva nirmalam; saandra tuSaara iva shiitalaaH; in three compounds 'like' is unsaid, even then they are perfect similes.

"Nights of this season are unenjoyable for the people, for they are chilled with the huddles of snow, further chilled by moonbeams of the moon, besides, these nights are ornamented with very whitish clusters of cluttered and lacklustre stars. [5-4]

5-5. gR^ihiita= on taking; taambuula= betel leaves; vilepana= body creams; sraja= tassels of flowers; sukha aasava aamodita= delightful, with recreational drinks, fragranced; vaktra pankajaaH= with faces, lotus-like; prakaama= desirably [fumigated]; kaala aguru= with black, aloe vera; dhuupa= fumigated; vaasitam= fragranced; striyaH utsukaaH= women, enthusiastically; shayyaa gR^iham= bed, chambers; vishanti= entering.

"Taking betel leaves and their enclosing material like lime, areca-nut parings, and other fragrant material for chewing, besides handling body creams and tassels of flowers, for it is cool to wear them on, womenfolk with their lotus-like faces that are fragranced with delightful recreational drinks are enthusiastically entering their bedchambers that are desirably fragranced with the fumigation of aloe vera resin. [5-5]

5-6. kR^ita aparaadhaan= made, faults [husbands at fault]; bahushaH tarjitaan api= repeatedly, even, daunted; sa vepadhuun= with, waver; saadhvasa lupta cetasaH= by fear [by hesitation,] with ciphered[h1], hearts; niriikshya bhartR^In= on looking at, husbands; surata abhilaaSiNaH= for lovemaking, longing for; striyaH= women; sa madaa= with, lust; aparaadhaan visasmaruH= [husbands'] faults, overlooked.

"On entering bedchambers seen are the irritant husbands irritating for the arrival of their wives; but these husbands were at fault once for which they were daunted repeatedly earlier, for which they are now wavery as hesitation ciphered their hearts; on looking at such husbands who are now longing for lovemaking, the lustful women overlooking their faults are joining them, lest time and opportunity fritters away... thus this season unites couples, though they are at loggerheads... [5-6]

5-7. pra kaama= much, impassioned; kaamaiH= lusting for; yuvabhiH= by young men; sa nir dayan= with, without, pity [relentlessly]; nishaasu diirghaasu= in nights, longish; abhiraamitaaH ciram= gratified, for a long time; shrama kheditaH urasaH= by strain, ached, with busts; striyaaH= women; nava yauvanaaH= new, to adulthood; kshapa avasaane= night, after the end of; bhramanti mandam= moving about, sluggishly.

"Young men much impassioned and lusting for their women are now relentlessly gratifying their women that are new to adulthood for a long time in longish nights of winter, whereby those young women are moving about sluggishly on the next morning with aching busts strained in last night's escapade. [5-7]

5-8. kuurpaasaka= by bodice, by breast-band; piiDita stanaaH= squeezed, [with such]  breasts; sa  raaga  kausheyaka= with, colour [coloured, dyed] silk wraparound; bhuuSitaH urasaH= ornamented, with busts; niveshita antaH kusumaiH= entered, inside [into head-hair,] with flowers; shiroruhaiH= with hairdos; manoj~na= delightful; striyaH= womenfolk; vibhuuSayanti iva= embellishing, as though; hima aagamam= snow, arrival [season of winter.]

"Brassieres squeezing breasts tightly, on which upper-fringe of colourful silkcloth wrapped loosely, on which ornaments dangle adorably, the busty women with flower stuck hairdos are delighting as if they themselves are the embellishments of this wintry season. [5-8]

5-9. kaaminaH= lustful men; vilaasiniibhiH= with flirtatious women; kunkuma raaga pinjaraiH= vermilion, coloured, ochreish; sukha upa sevyaiH= comfortable, for close, self-indulgence; nava  yauvana= new, to adulthood; uuSmabhiH payodharaiH= warmish, with bosoms; paripiiDita  urasaH= overly pressed, with chests; shiitam paribhuuya= coldness, on brazening out; svapanti= sleeping.

"Nowadays the chests of lustful men are ocherish, for they are rubbed against bosoms of their flirtatious women adorned with vermilion coloured skincare; young women too are befitting for a comfortable close self-indulgence, for they are new to adulthood and have warmish bosoms; thus the men are sleeping these days by tightly pressing the bosoms of their ladyloves against their own to brazen out the chilling coldness of winter; thus the women of age have an edge on the frostiness of this season. [5-9]

5-10.  striyaH hR^iSTaaH= women of age, gladdened; sugandhi nishvaasa vikampita= richly scented, by suspirations, undulated; utpalam= lotuses; manoharam= heart-stealing; kaama rati= desirous, of lovemaking; prabodhakam= excitant; madaniiyam= stimulating [antidepressant]; uttamam madyam= best, hard drink; kaamibhiH saha= lovers, along with; nishaasu pibanti= in nights, consuming.

"In nights gladdened women of age, desirous of lovemaking are consuming best, delighting, excitant, and stimulant hard drinks along with their lovers, in which drinks lotus petals are dipped for fragrance, and which are undulating with the richly scented lusty huffs and puffs of those women. [5-10]

5-11.  apa gata= to side, gone [got rid of]; mada raagaa= passion's, penchant; patyuH  aalinganena= by husband's, embrace; nibiDa kR^ita kuca agraa= compress, made to [subdued,] breast's, tops [nipples]; ekaa yoSit= one, woman of age; prabhaate= in morning; priyatam= by lover; paribhuktam= completely enjoyed; sva deham viikshamaaNaa= own, body, on seeing [on examining]; vrajati shayana vaasaat= going out, from bed, chamber; vaasam anyat= to chamber, another; hasantii= laughingly.

"In the morning, one woman on getting rid of her penchant of passion got up and examined her body; she observed that her nipples are subdued by her lover's embrace, and thus concluding that her body is completely enjoyed by her lover, she is going out of the bedchamber to another chamber, smiling her content.  [5-11]

5-12. aguru surabhi dhuupa= by aloe vera resin, fragrance, fumigated with; aamoditam= fragranced with; kesha paasham= hairs, plaits; galita= slithered; kusuma maalam= flowers, circlets; tanvatii [vahantii]= doing, discarding [bearing in bun]; kuncita agram= contorting [furling up,] ends of braid; guru nitambaaa= with heavy, rumps; [other mms nimna naabhii  su madhyaa= one with  hollow, navel, good, waist]; nimna madhya avasaanaa= puny, middle, edges [with slender waistline]; caaru shobhaa= charmingly, delightful; anyaa kaaminii= another, attractive woman; uSasi shayanam tyajati= at dawn, bed, leaving.

"At dawn, another charmingly delightful and attractive woman, whose rumps are heavy and waistline slender, joggled the ends of her slithered hair plaits from her shoulders which made the circlets of flowers that adorned her bun last night but now withered to flop; then on furling up that hair which is fragrant, for it was fumigated with aloe vera resin during last night, she is leaving the bed in that morning.  [5-12]

5-13. sadya eva= just now, only; ambu dhautaiH= by water, cleansed; kanaka kamala kaantaiH= golden, lotus', in sheen; vadana bimbaiH= with faces, discs [disc-shaped faces]; shravaNa  taTa  niSaktaiH= ears, edges of, touching; paaTala= whitish; upaanta= medially; netraiH= with eyes; ansa  sansakta keshaiH= on shoulders, clasping, with hair; [elliptic, upalakshitaa= appear to be; yoSitaH= women of age; adya= now, nowadays; uSasi= in mornings; gR^iha madhye= in houses, middle of [heart of]; shriya iva= Goddess Lakshmi-s [or, personified prosperity,] like; samsthitaa= snuggling.

"With their discoid faces just cleansed with water looking more like golden lotuses, on which wide and medially whitish eyes whose edges touch the edges of ears, and with just cleansed hair dangling and clasping their shoulders, those women of age that are snugly in the heart of their houses in these days, appear to be many a personified prosperity, goddess lakshmi-s, amidst her golden lotuses. [5-13]

"While observing the nail puckered tops of their bosoms with edges of nails of their lovers during last night, and while touching the teeth-cracked tender-leaf like lower lips with their tongues, those women of age are rejoicing, for all this is according to their sought-after delectation, thus they are rejoicingly applying makeup on their faces at the dawn.  [5-15]

5-16. pracura= abundant; guDa vikaaraH= sugar-candies, transmuted [modified items]; svaadu  shaali= relishable, rice; ikshu ramyaH= sugar-cane juice, delightful; prabala surata keliH= intensified, lovemaking's, disport; jaata kandarpa darpaH= occasioned, Love-god's, self-conceit; priya jana rahitaanaam= loved, ones, people devoid of; citta santaapa hetuH= for hearts, scorching, cause of; shishira samaya eSaH= winter, time, this; shreyase vaH astu  nityam= in propitiousness, of yours, be there, always.

"In this season, new sugar-candies and their modified sweetmeats will be abundant, new rice relishable, new sugar-cane juice delightful, disport of lovemaking intensified for the hauteur of Lovegod occasions anew, but this season alone will be the cause for scorching the hearts of those that are devoid of their loved ones; however, let this winter season be always bring propitiousness to you all.  [5-16]
